Elf NEWs – A Timbuk elf gives a tour of what’s new at the workshop

Hello. I am a Timbuk elf, and I am here to give you a tour of our workshop. No, I don't mean the one in the North Pole, where our cousins make toys. I mean the one in the back of our store, beyond the "Employees Only" sign, where we test the toys.

Can you believe our cousins at the North Pole have NEVER gone skateboarding? It is always too cold and snowy, where they live. That is why they invented the Spooner-a durable, curved plastic board that can be used to practice one's tricks inside! But, of course, never having seen a skateboard, our cousins had to use snowboards for their inspiration. Thus, they created a skateboard-snowboard hybrid, perfect for performing both ollies and crails. The Timbuk elves have been having fun sending e-mail (the "e" stands for elf) videos to our cousins, featuring all the new tricks we have learned!

The attire for North Pole elves is quite simple-just a tunic, a pair of pants, a hat, and pointy-toed slip-on shoes. But, here in America, clothing is much more difficult to figure out. That is why the Timbuk elves commissioned our cousins to make us teddy bears that would teach us how to dress. The bear's clothing isn't exactly conventional-one is dressed like a princess, and the other is dressed like a pirate. But, nonetheless, they have been quite helpful to us. I have finally learned how to tie my shoes, and my friends have almost learned how to zip their jackets!

Tying and zipping aren't the only tasks that prove difficult with such miniature fingers. Limited by our tiny digits, we just couldn't get a grip on Legos. That is why our cousins have invented something similar, but smaller, called Nanoblocks. The styles of Nanoblocks include Neuschwanstein Castle, the Eifel Tower, and the Taj Mahal. But, the favorite style among the Timbuk elves is the space shuttle, because-when it is fully constructed-it is just big enough for us to ride.

I am not exactly a brilliant engineer. But, my brilliant cousins have invented an engineering kit so simple any adult elf, or ten-year-old human, can use it. The new Snap Circuits XP allows children to build their very own computer!

One of our new toys says "Made in America." That is not a lie. Although we typically leave the toy construction to our cousins in the North Pole, our estranged uncle from California made the Green Toys School Bus, out of recycled milk jugs. (Don't ask us why Uncle Snowball chose California over the North Pole. None of us really know.)

Now, normally, we elves live life in our miniature forms. But, being magical creatures, we have the ability to grow, when the situation requires. Since our jobs at Timbuk Toys often require height, you can spot us walking around the stores, appearing to be the height of average humans, and wearing blue aprons. If you have questions regarding any of the toys mentioned here, or any of our others, feel free to ask!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Get ready to PLAY, when loved ones are near! And, while you are sharing the figgy pudding (whatever that is), share the gift of FUN! The Timbuk Team is here to ensure that no one is excluded from the reindeer games… or any of the other great games we carry!

Rory’s Story Cubes:

The holiday season is a time to be with family. But, how do you strike up a conversation with your third cousin twice removed, whom you are certain you have never met? You play a round of Rory’s Story Cubes! Simply take turns rolling the nine “story cubes” and telling tales inspired by the pictures that come up. What better way to impress your relatives than to tell them about that time you “Flew around the world in your hot air balloon and climbed the pyramids of Giza with your pet sheep?” There are no winners or losers in this game. Everyone will know that your story is the best, so there is no need to get competitive with the in-laws.

Pass the Pigs:

At Thanksgiving Dinner, while passing the turkey and mashed potatoes, don’t forget to also Pass the Pigs! Toss the silly swine and rack up points according to how the two pigs land. Watching you roll oinkers, trotters, and snouters, your relatives will soon be squealing with laughter. But, remember not to “pig out,” or you could lose everything! When your turn is over, don’t be a hog – pass the pigs!

Tic Tac Turn:

For a twist on an old classic, give Tic Tac Turn a spin. This game of challenge and strategy takes tic-tac-toe to a whole new level – or, four whole new levels, to be exact. On your turn, place one of your pieces on any of the four levels, OR rotate a level (to either help yourself or hinder an opponent). The concept is simple - align four pieces, using any or all of the four levels, and play with up to four people – but, this game will require a cunning strategy to win!

Kanoodle:

This brainteaser, recommended for children 7 and up, is easy enough for children, but challenging enough for those of us in the “and up” category. Whether you are filling in the 2D grid or constructing the 3D pyramids, the instruction booklet shows you how to begin, but you must figure out how to arrange the remaining pieces-of assorted shapes and sizes-on your own. The Timbuk Toy Experts are stuck on this game, (in more ways than one)! Can your noodle handle Kanoodle?

Killer Bunnies:

Keep as many of your bunnies alive as possible while collecting carrots, avoiding hillbilly barbeques, and dodging such dangerous weapons as the dreaded kitchen whisk! This game of rogue rabbits is not for the faint of heart, and is recommended for children over 13.

Forbidden Island:

In order to succeed in this unique game, adventurers must band together and use each other’s special abilities to collect the treasure before the island sinks! This game, recommended for children 10 and over, inspires cooperation rather than competition!

Think Outside the Blocks with Zoomorphs Building Sets

With Zoomorphs building sets young genetic engineers, who like to think outside the blocks, can create whatever fantastical creatures their hearts and minds desire. Each Zoomorphs set contains enough interlocking plastic body parts to build four to six animals, but whether those animals will be creepy, crawly, hairy, scary, or even imaginary is entirely up the builder.

I, myself, felt a sudden surge of inspiration, upon opening the Dinomorphs set. I always thought it was unfair that Tyrannosaurus-Rex had such scrawny arms. In an attempt boost his self-esteem, I gave him broader shoulders, longer arms, and a new nickname: Tyrannosaurus-Flex!

T-Flex loves the spotlight, but for when it can’t be all dinosaurs all the time, try your hand at creating a drag-ryph-on (that’s a cross between a dragon and a gryphon) or a pega-phoenix–sus (a cross between a phoenix and a Pegasus) with our Mythmorphs set.

Spending our days in a toy store, surrounded by children, we hear a lot of excellent kid quips, and see a lot of silly sights. Here are a few Timbuk tales that we just couldn’t resist sharing…

• While a young girl and her father were shopping together, the father wandered off to look for a gift. A few minutes later, we heard the girl say, “Daddy, you need to stay where I can see you!”

• A little girl, just over one-year-old, was playing with our Calico Critters tree house. She was especially fascinated by the miniature plastic rocking chair. She placed the rocking chair on the floor, turned around so that her back was to the chair, looked over her shoulder, squatted down, and attempted to sit in the rocker.

• A little boy was trying on all of our dress-up hats. He didn’t say much, until he put on the crown. Then, he put his hands on his hips, cleared his throat, and said (in an authoritative voice), “Everyone, everyone must listen to my words!”

• Little boy: Can I get a rubber chicken?

Mother: It doesn’t lay eggs. Is that all right?

Little boy: Yeah, that’s all right… Is it a rooster?

• Little boy (asking the price of a cowboy rifle): How much dollars is this?

Timbuk Sales Associate: It’s 21 dollars and 99 cents.

Little boy: Can we change that?

“Discover the Fun”… of Learning!

The new school year is fast approaching. Therefore, we would like to pass you some notes on Timbuk's top toys for refreshing academic skills.

Brain Quest (Ages 3+) and Brain Quest for the Car (Ages: 7-12)

Are your children hung-up on hangman? Are you having trouble towing them away from tic-tac-toe? Allow us to suggest something new!

To make long road trips fun and educational, there's no better travel companion than Brain Quest for the Car, or any of the Brain Quest trivia booklets, for that matter. Multiple children can entertain themselves by quizzing each other; or, a single child can quiz their self. A sample question from the third-grade trivia booklet reads, "Change the verb to its past from: 'Yesterday, I eat too much.'"

Speaking of eating too much… Being small and compact, Brain Quest is also ideally suited for restaurants.

Pluses and Minuses Keyboard (Ages: 3+)

The pluses and minuses keyboard is a fantastic tool for learning basic addition and subtraction. On each key is an addition or subtraction question, and under each key is the answer. Pushing the transparent key allows children to quiz themselves, and thereby promotes independent learning skills.

Exact Change Game (Ages: 6+)

Another staff favorite is the award winning game Exact Change. The object is to play all of your cards as quickly as possible. The faster you can match currency values and make exact change, the faster you can empty your hand.

Maria, from our University Hills store, has played the game with her nephew and says, "I like Exact Change, because it is fun to play, and easy for young children to understand. Because it is a game, and because they want to win, children are motivated to learn. There's no pressure-they aren't standing in front of a cash register. They can learn at their own pace; but they will want to learn quickly, in order to win!"

The Human Body Anatomy Kit (Ages: 8+)

For the more sedentary of "body-builders," this anatomy kit provides an excellent brain workout, while guiding children through the construction of their vey own human anatomy model. The kit comes with a 12" stand, 12 bones and muscles, 9 vital organs, a body parts organ-izer (pun almost certainly intended), tweezers, forceps, and a 32-page illustrated booklet, which features child-friendly explanations, such as, "Cells are like tiny water balloons: each one filled with liquid." Super summer symbolism for super summer learning!

Blue Orange games keep minds sharp, while keeping summer fun

Kids love games and so do we! Imagine our excitement when we learned that we would be having a play-date with a young man from Paris, who would teach us to play all the new games from Blue Orange… while speaking in a gorgeous French accent!

During his visit, Gucci showed us 22 of his favorite Blue Orange games! We learned all new games and enjoyed some old favorites. I still think the “crème de la crème” is a game called Gobblet Gobblers. In this game of tic-tac-toe with a twist, players are allowed to usurp spots formerly held by their opponent. As Gucci says, “Gobblet Gobblers [is my favorite because], you can play it with children of any age, but there is also some strategy.” (Can you hear that being said with a French accent?)

Gobblet Gobblers isn’t the only Blue Orange game that puts a twist on old favorites.

Blue Orange’s Yamslam is similar to the popular dice game Yahtzee, but takes rolling and scoring to a whole new level with ample opportunity for bonus points!

For those who love to play Bananagrams, but consider themselves better math magicians than word wizards, Blue Orange presents Sumoku! In Sumoku, rather than combing letters, players roll a die, and then align numbered tiles to create multiples of the digit rolled. Goodbye, dictionary… Hello, abacus!

When it was time for him to leave, Gucci offered to let us borrow some of his toys. One of our favorites is a new game called Fast Track, the object of which is to send all ten wooden chips sailing into your opponent’s side of the board. The challenge is that you have to do so by using an elastic band to shoot them through a small hole. Swing by, and we’ll show you how to play!

By teaching important skills such as: hand-eye coordination, basic mathematics, number recognition, color recognition, sequencing, balance, and memory, Blue Orange products are the perfect tools for keeping your child’s mind sharp, while keeping the summer all fun and games!

Variations of the Blue Orange Game Spot It

Gucci’s Special Variation of Spot It:

During his visit, Gucci taught us a special variation of Spot It that is not listed in the instruction booklet.

Lay 12 Spot It cards on the table. The object is to collect as many cards as possible. The way you collect cards is by finding a match between THREE of the 12 cards. And, don’t forget - as in the other variations of Spot It – you must yell out the name of the matching items, before you can collect your cards! Each time three cards are collected, lay three more cards on the table. The player with the most cards, at the end of the game, is the winner.

Ultimate Spot It, (invented by the staff at Highland’s Ranch):

Possibly inspired by The Snipe Hunt Game (see earlier blog entry), the rules for Ultimate Spot It are as follows: Hide 10 Spot It cards around your house (or around a toy store). Then, gather a group of friends to search. The object of the game is to find and collect as many pairs as possible. In order to pick up a pair of cards, players must find the matching item between them, and – as in regular Spot It - call out the name of that item. But, beware! If you find one card, it is important not to give away its location, or another player could take it before you find a match! The player with the most pairs, at the end of the game, is the winner!

Have you ever gone snipe hunting? Have you ever caught a snipe? I have!

It was a rainy day at Timbuk Toys and, I admit, I was a little dubious about the whole ordeal. The last time I went snipe hunting was with my Uncle Louie, and all I found was… my Uncle Louie. Initially, I thought this excursion would be just as hopeless. But my Timbuk team was determined to play “Snipe Hunt!”

We set off to hunt through the toy store. My initial search efforts recovered some plastic plates that go with our play kitchen (I found them in a Dinosaur Zipbin), and a couple Giant Microbes that had, seemingly, escaped their home (I found them in the Calico Critters Townhouse); but no snipe. I was about to give up when, all of a sudden, I heard a noise! A chirping noise! Could it be? Yes, yes it was! A snipe! There, perched beside the Bruder trucks, was the loveliest plastic snipe I have ever seen! I caught it!

We continued to hunt Snipe all through the rainy afternoon, and many curious customers, young and not-so-young, joined in the game. Playing “Snipe Hunt” was a great way to spend that rainy afternoon!

Snipe Hunt is a fabulous game that stimulates the imagination of children and adults alike. For multi-searcher play, two competing teams race to find each other’s snipe. Or, for single-searcher play, a parent or guardian can hide the snipe and let their child search for it. As soon as the snipe are removed from the nest, their internal timers are activated. After 2.5 minutes, they begin to chirp, making them easier to find. And, after 5 minutes, their beady red eyes begin to glow, allowing for nighttime play. Snipes are made for outdoor or indoor use. Perfect for any camping trip, backyard, or rainy day indoors, Snipe Hunt is guaranteed fun for the entire family!

Timbuk Toys opens new store in Highlands Ranch on Earth Day

Timbuk Toys is opening its doors at its third store this Wednesday, April 22^nd in The Highlands Ranch Town Center. “Earth Day seemed to be a perfect date to open for business at our new location,” said Sallie Kashiwa, owner and lead manager of Timbuk Toys. “We’ve all been working for over six months to get ready for this event, and there could be no better way to express our values than to open on Earth Day.”

Kashiwa explained that her business has been about supporting community since she first opened in 1993. “Earth Day is about celebrating how we can all work together to minimize our collective impact on the planet, and supporting community businesses is an integral part of that goal. Likewise, as a merchant, my goal is to support communities with world-class service, products and value so that ‘shopping local’ becomes a positive choice for all the families in the area.”

Kashiwa also talked about making the hard choice to expand in the midst of this challenging economy. She said that expanding was “like her own mini Stimulus Package.” Instead of cutting hours and laying-off staff, the expansion has allowed her keep everyone fully employed as an investment in the future. “It was the right thing to do for many reasons,” she said, referencing numerous customers who have been suggesting for years that she consider opening a store further south than her current store locations.

The new store is located near C-470 and Lucent Blvd. at 9315 Dorchester Street, Highlands Ranch, CO 80129. 303-346-303. Hours are Mon-Sat 9:30-6:30, Sun 11:30-5:00.
